Which K-Drama Should You Watch Based On Your Taste in YA Novels?

If you’re new here, you should know that two of my main hobbies include reading (and writing!) YA novels, as well as watching Korean dramas (K-dramas for short). I decided on this Sunday afternoon to combine the two. Enjoy!

SO YOU LIKE WICKED FOX BY KAT CHO…

If you’re not familiar with Wicked Fox (you should be, it’s great), it’s a YA contemporary fantasy novel about a gumiho named Miyoung as she attempts to navigate an increasingly dangerous world while still trying to maintain her humanity. Wicked Fox is fast-paced, fun, and a little spooky. If you liked this book, you should definitely watch…

MY GIRLFRIEND IS A GUMIHO (2010)

A total classic, and gumiho is right there in the title.

For another contemporary update on Korean mythology, you can always watch one of the most beloved K-dramas of all time…

GOBLIN (2016-2017)

Goblin is one of my personal all-time favorite K-dramas, mixing action, romance, and drama all in one. You can also learn quite a bit about Korean mythology from this show, just as you can by reading Wicked Fox!

SO YOU LIKE THE SELECTION SERIES BY KIERA CASS…

The Selection and its sequels by Kiera Cass are known to be addictive and fun to read, full of opulent rich people and romantic drama between its characters. One drama that immediately comes to mind when I think of The Selection is the classic…

BOYS OVER FLOWERS (2009)

Boys Over Flowers is a classic for a reason. It’s been remade over and over and over again and it never gets old. There’s so much drama every single episode that you just can’t stop watching. Everyone is rich, everyone is good looking, and Geum Jan Di can’t make up her mind about anything. Once you’re done watching BOF, maybe binge…

METEOR GARDEN (2018)

Meteor Garden is not a K-drama, rather a Chinese drama, but it’s still very good! Think Chinese Boys Over Flowers, though a better comparison would be to the Taiwanese show of the same time. Both Boys Over Flowers and Meteor Garden are based off a Japanese manga series called Hana Yori Dango by Yoko Kamio. There’s also an anime version of the series if you can’t get enough of the characters after BOF and Meteor Garden!

SO YOU LIKE SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW BY MAURENE GOO…

Maurene Goo is no stranger to the K-drama scene. Her book, I Believe In A Thing Called Love, is all about a girl using tropes from K-dramas to find true love! Somewhere Only We Know, on the other hand, is about a K-pop idol who has a whirlwind romance with a photographer in Hong Kong, a la Roman Holiday. If you liked that book, you might like…

HER PRIVATE LIFE (2019)

Her Private Life is a newer drama about a semi-professional fangirl who tries to keep her private life (ha ha….) in check while sparring with her antagonistic boss at the museum she works at. While Her Private Life lacks the Roman Holiday angle, it’s still got plenty of idol-related drama and steamy romance scenes to keep you entertained!

If you’re looking for something a little more supernatural while also maintaining the fun lightheartedness of Somewhere Only We Know, you could also try…

MY LOVE FROM THE STAR (2013-2014)

Yes, this is about an actress falling in love with an alien. No, I will not explain further. Just watch the show. It’s so good, you guys.

SO YOU LIKE WARCROSS BY MARIE LU…

Warcross is one of my favorite sci-fi novels, combining augmented reality and video games all in one neon-colored package. I’m very picky about my sci-fi, but Warcross totally hit the jackpot with me. If you like the book as much as I do, you might also like…

MEMORIES OF THE ALHAMBRA (2018)

Memories of the Alhambra is unique in that its concept focuses on an augmented reality game of the same name. There’s plenty of action, romance, and video game goodness, just like Warcross! It’s the perfect show to watch if you’re a hard sell on sci-fi, but still want to watch something inventive.

Once you’re done with that, why not watch…

CITY HUNTER (2010)

City Hunter is thrilling and action packed, and Lee Min Ho is in it. What more could you want from a drama?

Well, I think this post is long enough, so I’ll stop myself here. Hopefully i gave you some new shows to watch. If you need me, I’ll be watching Boys Over Flowers for the fifteenth time…
